  • Slavery around long time in USA
  • But compromises were always an option
  • Compromises ended when tensions rose

Tensions rise

  • California Gold Rush 
  • State Admission Issues
  • Missouri Compromise

the breaking point

  • Dred Scott sued for his freedom
  • Supreme Court ruled against him
  • Unacceptable to the North-Ushistory.org

South Secedes

  • The Union was falling apart
  • South couldn't handle tensions
  • South Carolina seceded-formed Confederacy

The civil war

Fort Sumter

  • Property fights
  • South cut it off from supplies
  • Supply ships came, South Carolina fired on them
  • This began the Civil War

Robert E. lee/Battle of gettysburg

  • Joined confederacy out of loyalty to Virginia
  • Wanted peace- became military leader of the south
  • Fought the North at Pennsylvania, lost miserably
  • The South was incredibly weakened

  • South was too ambitous to keep slavery alive
  • Union captured Vicksburg
  • Union blocked all southern coasts
  • Took control of the Mississippi River
  • William Tecumseh ravaged Savannah and Atlanta

  • William took Columbia, shattering South Carolina

Emancipation proclamation

  • Lincoln thought slavery needed to be ended
  • Felt the south couldn't come back to the Union 
  • With his speech, freed most slaves in the US

Assassination of lincoln

  • John Wilkes Booth-white supremicist and slavery advocate  
  • Thought Lincoln was a Tyrant
  • Tried to kidnap him twice but failed
  • Decided he must kill him
  • Went into the theatre where Lincoln was watching a play

  • Shot his pistol 6 inches from Lincoln's head
  • Lincoln was taken to a nearby boarding house
  • He died the next morning

  • John was trapped in a Virginia Tobacco barn
  • Soldiers under order not to shoot him
  • Decided to burn the barn
  • Set it on fire but then the Sergeant shot and killed him
  • Taken to a nearby porch where his last words were "Useless ... useless!"

conclusion

  • The South was too forceful
  • The North was too agressive
  • It led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
