WHAT IS THE SPHINX?

  • The Sphinx is large hollow statue in Giza, egypt
  • The Sphinx is a mythical god
  • It posesses the head of a man and the body of a lion

IS IT IN GOOD SHAPE?

  • No!
  • It is slowly falling in on itself
  • It was given a renovation on its back left paw last year

WHY WAS IT BUILT?

  • The sphinx is the guardian to Khafara's pyramid.
  • It has been told to store plentiful riches
  • Many egyptians know it as "The rich man's storage"

HOW LARGE IS IT?

  • The body measures to 240 feet long
  • The head is 66 feet all around
  • It is expected to weigh a solid 2 tons!

HOW LONG DID THIS TAKE!

  • The builders left nothing about when or how long it took to build
  • People believe that it was a request from the 4th dynast king, Khatfre.
  • Many believe that it was built around 2558-2532 B.C
  • Aging seems to be around 4,500 years old

WHAT WAS IT MADE OF?

  • Carved from natural bedrock and limestone
  • Who built is is unknown
  • The sphinx's renovations are out of new limestone

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO THE NOSE?!

  • No one actually knows what happened
  • One belief is that Napoleon shot the nose off with a flaming arrow
  • There may have been an explosion while building
  • The most likely thing is that it was removed by a Sufi, because they thought it was a false god.
  • This man could have eaten it...:)
