Athough Belgium was to be a neutral country, Hitler and the King of Belgium decided otherwise. Therefore, there was little choice but to go into hiding. Jeannine was three years old at the time.

- Jeannine was sent to the home of a woman whom she did not know.

- Being 3 years old, she did not know much about her family.

- During her time in hiding, Jeannine was never mistreated, but she was never loved either.

WHAT ABOUT HER FAMILY?

  • Max, her brother was sent to a Christian home for boys.
  • Augusta was sent to a Catholic hospital.
  • Sarah, her mother, hid in a nursing home out in the country.
  • Her father was taken to Auschwitz, where he later died in a gas chamber.

During her time in hiding, Jeannine was allowed no interaction with other people, besides "auntie", so she made up imaginary friends.

She also made up board games to keep herself occupied.

CHALLENGE QUESTION

WHAT MAKES JEANNINE'S STORY SO DIFFERENT THAN OTHER KIDS THAT WHERE HIDDEN DURING THE HOLOCAUST?

What makes Jeannine's story so unique, is that she was such a young girl during this time, and her survival was as simple as going into the backyard, and hiding in an outhouse which, to most, is quite incredible.
