THE SUGAR ACT

HOW IT STARTED

  • Great Britain had won the French and Indian War.
  • Parliament still owed money.
  • In order to keep colonists safe, Great Britain must tax.
  • This leads to the Sugar Act of 1764.

WHAT IT IS

  • Sugar Act- set duties on Molasses and sugar imported by the colonists.
  • The colonists had to pay 3 cents for taxes.
  • The sugar act banned importation of rum and French wine.
  • The sugar act also taxed some wine, indigo, coffee, etc.
  • This act angered the colonists very much.

HOW IT ENDED

  • The Sugar Act ended in 1766
  • The sugar act was replaced for the revenue act of 1766.
