WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

  • Would show support for the Republic
  • Might encourage immigration to Texas
  • Lessen the possibility of a renewed war with Mexico
  • Hoped to lead to foreign trade and loans
  • Would improve the Republic's economy
  • Texans hoped it might pave the way for the the U.S. annexation of Texas

IMPORTANT DATES

  • 1836: U.S. president Andrew Jackson sent Henry Morfit to find out if Texas could maintain its independence
  • 1837: the U.S. recognized the new Texas Republic
  • 1839: Texas received recognition from France, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands
