  • Division of the Empire
  • External Invasions
  • Political Instability

REASON #3: POLITICAL INSTABILITY

  • Political Instability: Confusion and corruption among the government
  • WHY IT IS #3: Rome has a colorful history of political instability
  • Rome was able to rise after the 5 bad emperors, and it became a prosperous time
  • Loyalty fell with the knowledge of the inconsistency in the Senate and government
  • > The inconsistency left citizens untrusting and feeling unstable, meaning no prosperity

REASON #2: EXTERNAL INVASIONS

  • Rome was a powerful and vast empire, constantly waging war and usually winning
  • Under times of trouble and bad leadership, the army was not successful
  • The division of the Empire led them to be more vulnerable to attacks from others
  • Wars and invasions cost Rome their economy and security
  • WHY IT IS #2: This issue, with many others that follow, was the result of Reason #1

REASON #1: DIVISION OF THE EMPIRE

  • Due to overexpansion, the empire (and people of) we growing harder to control
  • Diocletian divided the Empire, separating the Greek-speaking from Latin-speaking
  • Cultural differences were too great, it was hardly the Roman Empire anymore
  • The movement of the capitol of Constantinople furthered the divide
  • Both halves were now extremely vulnerable to outside invasions and conflicts
