THIRD - [MILITARY PROBLEMS]

  • Rome struggled to marshal enough troop to defend the frontiers from rebellion
  • Emperor Hadrian was forced to build his famous wall to keep enemy at bay
  • As more funds were funneled into military, Roman tech. Adv. slowed
  • This left Rome's civil infrastructure in disrepair
  • Ranked Third because this threw money into military rather than civil affairs

SECOND - [EXTERNAL INVASIONS]

  • Eurasian Warriors drove many Germanic Tribes to the borders of Rome.
  • Romans forced the Goths into slavery, doing this they were creating a dangerous enemy within their borders.
  • Goths rose up in revolt and eventually routed a Roman army and killed the Eastern Emperor Valens.
  • Romans negotiated the barbarians in 378 AD, truce unraveled in 410 when Goth King Alaric sacked Rome
  • Ranked Second because the Roman army was attacked unexpectedly, this left Rome weak and vulnerable.

FIRST - [PLAGUE]

  • Killed a large number of Roman Citizens, leaving people helpless with no clear line of thought
  • Reducing numbers of laborers which declined argiculture and production
  • Roman Plague was very costly to Rome, which took money out of other investments such as military
  • Roman Plague is ranked First because it effected its protection, leaving it very vulnerable to attacks
  • *Also known as one of Romes "Dark Ages"*
