Prayer and Parasha

Removing the Torah from the Aron Kodesh

  • Prayer: Ayn Kamocha and V'yhi Binsoah
  • Ark is opened, congregation stands
  • Torah is taken from ark; carrier recites shema and prayers

  • Congregants welcome the Torah by kissing it using their tallit or siddur
  • Torah is carefully undressed and placed on reading table
  • Torah is usually rolled to the correct parashah for the particular shabbat

The Haftarah

  • Related to the Torah portion
  • Taken from the Nevi'im - the Prophets
  • is not "half-a-Torah"

The Torah is lifted, re-dressed, paraded through the congregation again and put back in the ark. Atz Chaim Hee is sung.
