  • The story of Sham and Shreya will take 
  • place in a culture in India, which is considered
  • unmoral in today's time. In India some families don't 
  • like the idea of their children choosing their own bride. 
  • This may be due to different castes ( social rankings ) , different

  • Family customs, grudges ( like in Romeo and Juliet )
  • and etc. If you were to choose your own bride you will 
  • be in heaps of trouble. Some families believe that its 
  • right is the parents choose who the bride is. Since, the parents
  • believe they know whats right for their children. 

Setting

  • The setting of the story will take place in India, Agra
  • Agra is well known for being the city to hold the world famous
  • Taj Mahal. Our hero and heroine will live in the same village that
  • is in Agra. This village is quite wealthy. Most of the residents are  
  • middle class workers. Our two families are wealthy and rich.

The Plot

  • The Rahuls and the Laxmans are two high class people
  • in Agra. They are wealthy and powerful. But, both familes
  • have a grudge against each other. Therefore, they have also
  • hated each other for centouries.

  • The Rahuls and the Laxmans have only one child. 
  • Sham is the child of the Rahuls and Shreya is the child of 
  • the Laxmans. One day the Rahuls and the Laxmans had to 
  • attend a huge festival in the village. EVERYONE in the village had
  • to attend the festival no matter what.

  • The Laxmans and the Rahuls were huge sponsors 
  • they always attended. However, this was the first time
  • that Sham Shreya were attending a festival. Sham came with
  • his friend Shantanam and they were having a merry time partying, dancing,
  • drinking. Shreya was quiet and observant during the festival

  • Sham first met Shreya in the corner of the festival ground.
  • They had quickly fell in love with each other. Soon, after the 
  • the festival was over, they met in a garden and proposed
  • their lover for each other. Although Shreya was concerned
  • if this was a good idea. Obviously, it was not

  • When Sham regained his senses he knew this would be 
  • a dangerous idea. Sham decided to ask pundit Mohan for help. 
  • The pundit suggested that they come to the temple to get married.
  • This way the Laxmans and the Rahuls won't be able to hurt them. Sham
  • and Shreya both agreed to this.

  • Shreya was origianally going to marry another wealthy prince
  • named Varun ( Paris ) . Paris had eavesdropped on Sham's conversation 
  • with the pundit. He was jealous and frustrated. He informed both the 
  • Laxmans and the Rahuls. These familes arranged a meeting with the 
  • governer of the city to decide Sham and Shreya's fate.

  • The governor decided to execute both Sham and Shreya.
  • For, it was illegal back then to choose your own bride. When  
  • the pundit heard of this, he decided not to help Sham and Shreya any more.
  • He feared his life would be at risk. So, he told the governor where Sham 
  • and Shreya will be at.

  • In the end Sham and Shreya are caught. They refused to
  • leave each other and wanted to die at the same time. As 
  • their punishment Sham and Shreya were both hung to death.
