There was no such thing as a tornado watch. People relied on newspaper, government mail, or word of the mouth. So there was really no warning.

Being so long ago there was very little technology. So warnings were very hard to come by. Storm systems had yet to be created so realistically there wasn't much that anyone could do to prevent a lot of what happened. Without knowing much about the storm an evacuation wouldn't have even been thought about.
