THE 'NOT SO CIVIL' CIVIL WAR

APRIL 12, 1861 - JUNE 2, 1865

CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR: SLAVERY

  • The South wanted slavery to help with farming on plantations but the North did not see a need for slave labor
  • This disagreement caused the two sides to turn against each other
  • Without slavery, the other 2 causes wouldn't exist

CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR: STATE'S RIGHTS

  • During the Civil War, this focused primarily on slavery and whether the federal government had the right to regulate or abolish slavery within a state

CAUSES OF THE CIVIL WAR: SECTIONALISM

  • Sectionalism- the excessive devotion to local interests and customs to a region of a nation
  • This further divided the country into two sections- the North and South

THE BATTLE OF FORT SUMTER

  • The first battle in the Civil War
  • "I have given Anderson a chance to surrender, but he did not take it. Now I must fight for what's rightfully mine."-Confederate Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard
  • "For 34 hours, we have endured the attacks with little ammunition and food. I had no choice but to surrender."-Union Maj. Robert Anderson

THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • The single bloodiest day in American history

  • This document freed over 3 million slaves

THE SURRENDER AT APPOMATTOX COURTHOUSE

  • Robert E. Lee surrendered his troops to Ulysses S. Grant and ended the Civil War

  • He was never able to piece the country back together and his death caused the entire nation to feel sorrow and shocked, not just the Northerners
