  • June, 1812: When America declared war on Great Britain.
  • July 1812: The city of York is burned down
  • August 1814 Britain invades washington and burns many buildings for revenge
  • February 1814: Peace Treaty is created and signed and Madison declares th

  • During the war Britain was also at war with France
  • America was also battling the First nations (who were unhappy with Americans settling on their land) at the same time
  • In some cases the Americans would be put up against the combined forces of the First Nations and Britain.

President James Madison was the fourth president of the United States. He served for eight years (March 1809- March 1817). James Madison had a huge part in the war of 1812 for if he had never declared war it may have never happened. A few fun facts about James Madison are: James Madison was the first president of the United States to also be a member congress. He was Americas shortest and lightest president at 5’ 4" and approximately 100 pounds , And he was related to George Washington who was his half first cousin twice removed. Madison asked the congressmen if war could be declared against Britain and that's when it all began. The famous Presidents last words were "I better talk lying down" before he died at the age of 85.
