PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The whistleblower

Popular geopolitics

Police officer Kathryn Bolkovac is sent to Bosnia to be part of the International Police of the United Nations, but when she's there, she finds out about human trafficking and sexual slavery activities, mainly directed by UN officers, the military and the IPTF. Kidnapped from other countries, the girls were sold to traffickers in Bosnia.

Bolkovac tries to make the girls testify against this violation, but everybody is against her, trying to stop her from talking about it. Finally, she goes to the BBC media and reports everything that is happening in Bosnia.

POPULAR GEOPOLITICS IN THE MOVIE

1. International Actors, i.e. the UN, placed peacekeepers in Bosnia to keep justice and peace after the war.

2. The UN Internal Affairs dept. closed the cases of the girls involved because they were more concerned about the economic relations with the US.

3. The media was used as a primal resource to inform the world about the human trafficking happening in Bosnia.

4. Religion is also an important subject seen in the movie, when a muslim woman was examined for damage and the Bosnian men said she deserved it because of her religion.

5. Police force comes into action when they raided a bar, where they found girls used for prostitution.

6. A posible NGO could be the refugee where trafficked girls are taken for safety after being rescued.

7. Proof of the UN officers misconduct is found at the bar, where Bolkovac found several pictures of them with girls.

8. Two of the girls, asked to testify against their traffickers, are helped by the GDA to find a way back to their homes.

9. Several institutions were involved in the human trafficking activities, such as the IPFT, SFOR, the military and some diplomats. They helped take the girls to the border in order to get into Bosnia.

10. Negligence from part of the director of the UN was seen, claiming that democracy was validated by England.

CONCLUSION

In the process of backing up the human rights and the civil stability in Bosnia and Herzegovina many actors intervened, among them the UN who sent forces of peace keeping in order to make a safe transition to democracy after war took place at the region.

It can be observed how not only their help was almost insignificant but in cases the same men who were sent to help were involved in cases of human trafficking, and also how priorities in the world are based on economic relations rather than human dignity which leaves unprotected millions of people who are not considered priority by the international organizations.

In this case the media played an important role by leaking relevant information about the crimes committed in Bosnia to the rest of the world.
It is here where critical geopolitics take a relevant position in the way that international conflicts are analyzed because now other actors who were considered minor before, such as the media, take relevance and make the difference because they speak by themselves and inform the rest of the world of what happens besides the official announcements given by IGO’s
