The setting of the story is in "Early Spring, 1946" (page 32).

4.
ATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere is very tense and scary for the girls
Yvette is embarrassed after the teachers catch her and the other students are making fun of her
"Yvette could feel her face getting hot and flushed (pg.36)
When Yvette is at Mildred's house they start to make fun of Mrs. Ralston
"dop... dopey... M... Mi... Mrs. Ra..Ral...ston...."(pg. 39)

POINT OF VIEW
The story is in third person
This means the author uses he, she, and they
Mildred is very open minded-she doesn't mind when others pester her about her religion
Yvette is also outgong, she doesn't care that Mildred is Jewish and plays with her anyways
Third person helps you understand what both characters are feeling

6.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Both girls are nervous about what they are going to do at first
Later the girls know that they are right and that the teacher is wrong
The teacher is segregating students
They are still too nervous to talk about it

They are being pregious about christians by not letting them have another type of cuture's food

Symbol
The symbol is the special lunch
This helps understand the segregation in the school
It also symbolizes the conflict between the teacher and student
Since the Yvette and the teachers were fighting over the lunch, it is the symbol
It helps explain the conflict and theme

9.
Plot
In the beginning, Yvette and Mildred are waiting on the lunch line
This is the rising action
The climax is when the teacher catches Yvette and reprimands her
The conflict is person vs. person, teacher vs. student.
The resolution is when the girls laugh about the teachers being wrong

IRONY
It is unexpected how the teachers are pregidous about the Christians after World War II
It is also unexpected how the girls laugh about how the teachers are wrong

AUTHORS BACKROUND
Nicholasa Mohr is very similar to Yvette
She, like Yvette, is also poor
She also had many siblings
She probably wrote this story about a former childhood situation
Nicholasa's father died when she was eight leaving her mother with seven children
