ATMOSPHERE

  • The atmosphere is very tense and scary for the girls
  • Yvette is embarrassed after the teachers catch her and the other students are making fun of her
  • "Yvette could feel her face getting hot and flushed (pg.36)
  • When Yvette is at Mildred's house they start to make fun of Mrs. Ralston
  • "dop... dopey... M... Mi... Mrs. Ra..Ral...ston...."(pg. 39)

POINT OF VIEW

  • The story is in third person
  • This means the author uses he, she, and they
  • Mildred is very open minded-she doesn't mind when others pester her about her religion
  • Yvette is also outgong, she doesn't care that Mildred is Jewish and plays with her anyways
  • Third person helps you understand what both characters are feeling

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

  • Both girls are nervous about what they are going to do at first
  • Later the girls know that they are right and that the teacher is wrong
  • The teacher is segregating students
  • They are still too nervous to talk about it

CHARACTER…CONTINUED

  • The girls laugh at the teachers because they know that they are right
  • They are being pregious about christians by not letting them have another type of cuture's food

Symbol

  • The symbol is the special lunch
  • This helps understand the segregation in the school
  • It also symbolizes the conflict between the teacher and student
  • Since the Yvette and the teachers were fighting over the lunch, it is the symbol
  • It helps explain the conflict and theme

Plot

  • In the beginning, Yvette and Mildred are waiting on the lunch line
  • This is the rising action
  • The climax is when the teacher catches Yvette and reprimands her
  • The conflict is person vs. person, teacher vs. student.
  • The resolution is when the girls laugh about the teachers being wrong
