What is theme?

  • Life lesson,
  • meaning,
  • moral, or
  • message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work

Theme is what the story teaches readers

(or in other words...)

Theme is NOT a word,
it is a sentence.
(i.e. "Love" is NOT a theme.)

Examples of theme

  • Money can't buy love.
  • Love is blind.
  • Good triumphs over evil.

So how do I identify the theme?

Identifying themes

  • Themes are NOT explicit (in other words... A character will never say "The theme of the story is....")
  • Themes are IMPLIED.
  • Themes are bigger than the story.

Theme applies to the "real world." Think "big picture." Think "real world advice."
