Signs of Bread and Wine

  • We offer bread and wine at mass during the presentation of the gifts.
  • The bread and wine is symbolic of all the gifts God has given to us.
  • They only had unleavened bread while fleeing from Egypt.
  • Wine is significant in the Old Covenant.
  • Drinking wine was sharing of joyful anticipation of the coming of the Messiah.

INSTITUTION

  • Jesus' institution of the Eucharist is a sign of His love.
  • When He left the body and blood to his companions as a sign of his deep love.
  • He asked His apostles to share it with others and to share the death and resurrection.
  • At Passover, Jesus chose to show that His love was Sacrificial Love.

"IN MEMORY"

  • At the Last Supper, Jesus said, "Do this in memory of me."
  • This moment doesn't have one special day.
  • Intended to be celebrated every day.
  • Intended to be celebrated every time we recieve the Eucharist.

Thanksgiving and Praise

  • The Eucharist is a sacrifice for the saving word of Christ.
  • The word Eucharist - Greek word meaning thanksgiving.
  • We thank God through the Eucharist for all He's given us.
  • We thank God in a special way for His son, Jesus.
  • In every Eucharist, Jesus himself prays for us.

SACRIFICIAL MEMORIAL OF CHRIST

  • Sacrifice and memorial of Christ.
  • After the words at the Eucharist, we find the prayer, The Memorial.
  • We remember Christ's Passion, Death, Ascension, and Resurrection.
  • We are proclaiming the mighty works of God that are made present in our midst.
  • Even though Christ died once and for all on the cross, His sacrifice is present in the Eucharist.

SACRIFICE AND MEMORIAL OF THE CHURCH

  • Every Eucharist:
  • - the whole Church is united.
  • - is in union with the Pope.
  • - brings us into unity with Church members on Earth and in heaven.
  • - is offered for the faithful departed.

  • "The Eucharistic Church."
  • Written by Pope John Paul 2.
  • The Eucharist is a oneness in time between the Triduum and our own time.
  • The making present of the Paschal Mystery.
  • Pope John Paul 2 shares his own experiences with the Eucharist.
