THOMAS BECKETT

BACKGROUND

• People's loyalty divided between Pope and King
• Henry II disapproves church's lenient punishment
• Henry II and TB were best *cough* bros *cough*
• Henry even made him chancellor
• Henry has really really bad bad temper

AMBITION

• Henry wanted TB to be appointed as AoC
• Beckett : our friendship will turn to hate
• TB took the post, and changed (personality)
• 1164 - TB pissed Henry off
• Took 6 years before he came back

ESCALATION

• 1170 - TB asked pope to excommunicate Duke of York
• Pissed Henry :"will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest ?"
• 4 knights heard Henry and went to kill TB
• It was a really really gruesome murder, in the church floor

AFTERMATH

• Canterbury people tore TBs shirt and dipped in his blood
• Pope immediately made him a * SAINT *
• Henry asked pope for forgiveness and prayed etc.
• People claimed that visiting his shrine rid them of illness

CONTEXT

• many set off to visit the shrines in holy lands
• even more set off to visit the relics of Saint TB in Canterbury Cathedral
• The Wife of Bath is described as an experienced pilgrim
• Most people wanted to cure their diseases or illnesses, even as a Holliday
• Our dear Alison wanted to find MR. 6 from a bunch of *dicks*
