THOMAS JEFFERSON

He was born on 4/13/1743 on his parents plantation in Shadewell, Virginia.

CHILDHOOD

• Had tutor named Reverend William Gray
• Had love of music and could play violin at age 9
• Father died when Tom was 14

MIDDLE LIFE

• Went to the College of William & Mary in Virginia
• Married Martha Skelton in 1772, had 6 children
• Went to Second Continental Congress in 1775

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Wrote Declaration of Independence
• Built Monticello , a work of outstanding architecture
• Invented swivel chair and dumbwaiter
• Elected 3rd President of the U.S.A.
• Made Luisiana Purchase for $15 million

• Sold his library to Congress for $23,950
• Convinced VA. legislature to set aside money for state college and public education
• University of VA. opens doors several years later

DEATH

• Died July 4,1826 , the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence
