  • Had tutor named Reverend William Gray
  • Had love of music and could play violin at age 9
  • Father died when Tom was 14

MIDDLE LIFE

  • Went to the College of William & Mary in Virginia
  • Married Martha Skelton in 1772, had 6 children
  • Went to Second Continental Congress in 1775

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Wrote Declaration of Independence
  • Built Monticello , a work of outstanding architecture
  • Invented swivel chair and dumbwaiter
  • Elected 3rd President of the U.S.A.
  • Made Luisiana Purchase for $15 million
