  • Father was a plantation owner and died young
  • This made him like his teachers more

  • Lawyer for eight years
  • He also loved Music and played violin
  • He was friends with John Adams but didn't support his ideas

Problems with Adams

  • Jefferson believed in a "wise and frugal" government,
  • while Adams went for a stronger central government.
  • This feud destroyed the friendship between the two

Decisions

  • Louisiana Purchase
  • Purchased the northwest from France
  • this almost double the size of the original 13 colonies.
  • He submitted a request for congress to fund an expedition
  • to explore the Mississippi River and western territories.

  • Passed an embargo on European goods
  • Embargo act later repealed, started war of 1812 with Britain
  • Sold his library to make the library of Congress
