MOOSE - ALCES AMERICANUS

  • The moose weighs us to 800 to 1,200 pounds.
  • It can be spotted feeding on many ponds on the trail.
  • Usually a solitary animal, it travels in herds in the summer months.
  • Moose are found throughout the United States.
  • They live in circumpolar boreal forests.

SALAMANDER - DESMOGNATHUS FUSCUS

  • Salamanders look like reptiles, but they are amphibians.
  • They have moist skin with no scales and no ear-openings.
  • You will find them along the trail hiding under rocks.
  • They are born as "efts" and then mature over three years.
  • Fully grown, they spend the remainder of their life in water.

PILEATED WOODPECKER - DRYOCOPUS PILEATUS

  • These birds became rare in eastern North America after colonization by Europeans.
  • Now, their population has increased and can be easily spotted.
  • This woodpecker eats mostly carpenter ants.
  • They use their strong bills to dig into wood and find their food.
