SALAMANDER - DESMOGNATHUS FUSCUS
Salamanders look like reptiles, but they are amphibians.
They have moist skin with no scales and no ear-openings.
You will find them along the trail hiding under rocks.
They are born as "efts" and then mature over three years.
Fully grown, they spend the remainder of their life in water.

PILEATED WOODPECKER - DRYOCOPUS PILEATUS
These birds became rare in eastern North America after colonization by Europeans.
Now, their population has increased and can be easily spotted.
This woodpecker eats mostly carpenter ants.
They use their strong bills to dig into wood and find their food.
