Future Communications

  • Press Conferences will be held daily at 11AM
  • Reporters were to give email addresses for further communications
  • Emergency press conferences would be held if any new details surfaced
  • Priority is to get information to officers invovled in the investigation
The police chief communicated that there would be daily press conferences, and gave a time for those press conferences. He also stated that emergency press conferences could happen if new pertinent information is obtained, the public needs to be aware of immediately. He told reporters they could give another lady their email addresses so new information could be sent to them as it was obtained. He also stated that while he wants to answer questions they have been asking (not during the press conference), getting information to the officers involved in the investigation is his highest priority at the moment.

Chief Weeks did not use many emotions in his conference.
He did not reflect confidence in what he was saying.

During the presentation the police chief was monotone and did not reflect a lot of emotion into what was a very serious situation. While he should not appear panicked, he did not reflect that he was concerned.

Based on this press conference it would not seem he would be a leader the public or even his police force would put a lot of trust in. He did not exude his ability to lead this investigation while keeping public confidence in his abilities high.

Although, he did seem to support the efforts of the officers in his control. He eluded to the point that it was important to give them information as soon as possible, and that his main priority was helping them in this case.

Chief Weeks had a Leader-centered perspective on leadership

Picture- (Damron & Patton, 2010)

The police Chief had exhibited the leader-centered perspective on leadership. He was the head of the situation and in charge of handling all aspect of the situation. He has to manage the officers and volunteers under him as well as the media. This situation called for a strong leader who could keep everything organized and on track.

Possible Changes for future press conferences

  • The police chief needs to use more emotion.
  • He needs to ensure the public that they are doing every thing possible
  • He needs to specify the resources being used to aid the investigation
  • He needs to exude his confidence in this situaiton
  • He needs to stress the importance of the publics ability to help
Police Chief Weeks is the person everyone is going to for answers. He is the person in the view of the public; therefore, there are somethings he could work on for future press conferences. He had a difficult time showing any type of emotion and he did not show much confidence in what he was saying. In order for the public and his own team to have hope in their efforts and confidence in his leading abilities he has to be a good leader.
He could have done more to assure the public that they were doing everything possible to find the boys. He could have listed more of the resources they were using to help with the search, and he could have left out that he was going off of information members of the public had Googled, rather than actual investigations by the police. He also could have stressed more the importance of the public and their ability to help. He really needs to work on his voice when speaking to make sure he stresses things that are more important.

STRESS of the situation

  • Time sensitive case -3 missing boys
  • The media
  • Mentally unstable father
  • Many unknowns in the case thus far
  • Information is limited
THere are many stressors in this situation. The first being the time sensative nature, the boys went missing on Thanksgiving and there is little information to go on regarding their whereabouts. The father is mentally unstable and is residing under watch for a possible suicide attempt, and there is possibly and unknown female.

The officer is trying to give information to the public on the case but at this point has very little to go on. When answering questions of the reporters, he is not able to answer many of them with much confidence. He does have the ethical issues as well to consider when answering questions and has to be sure to know what information can be released and what cannot, which will cause him extra stress.

INTERNAL Stress

  • Support of officers
  • Support of volunteers assisting search
  • Keeping morale high
  • Collecting information and disbursing it appropriatly
  • Remaining ethical and moral
Being involved in this case is stressful all on its own, but being the leader just makes the stress intensify. Not only is the Chief in charge of aiding the investigation to find the missing boys, he also has to make sure he is supporting his staff and keeping morale high. He has to be sure he is collecting all of the information on the case and disbursing it to appropriate personnel within the ethical limitations given. He needs to make sure people remain hopeful of a positive outcome, while exuding that he is in control of the situation and doing all he can to ge this case closed.

How to help the team deal with the stress

  • Give them support and easy access to informaiton
  • Switch up responsibilities
  • Make sure employees do not get burned out
  • Make sure they are trained on how to deal with media
  • Make sure they get appropriate time off
Picture - (Damron & Lawrence, 2010)

Part of Chief Weeks job is ensuring he is helping his team deal with the stress of this situation. This situation has extra stress due to the fact that it involves children. The chief needs to make sure he is supporting his staff in their efforts through good leadership. He needs to make sure he is switching up responsibilities when necessary so individuals do not get burned out of the job they are doing. He needs to be sure everyone is trained on how to address the media if they are approached, and they understand the ethical implications of them saying something they should not. He also needs to be sure that if people are getting burned out during the first intensive part of this investigation, that he is giving them the appropriate time off if needed.

Long term affects of stress

  • Cardiovascular disease and other chronic health issues
  • Cancer
  • Poor Sleep Quality
  • Suicide
  • Obesity
Picture-(WTOL, 2010)

Individuals who are first responders need to be aware of the stress they will have on themselves on a daily basis. Long term affects of stress can lead to some serious issues including cardiovascular disease, chronic health issues, poor sleep quality, suicide and obesity. These issues if not treated properly could lead first responders to have a poor quality of life. "Suicide rates were more than eight times higher in working officers than they were in officers who had retired or left the police force. - See more at: Suicide rates were more than eight times higher in working officers than they were in officers who had retired or left the police force. "Suicide rates were more than eight times higher in working officers than they were in officers that had retired or left the police force" (Goldbaum, 2012).

How will I Handle stress in this profession?

  • Make sure I am doing a job I believe in
  • Keep work and home seperate
  • Find hobbies
  • Exercise
  • Take vacations
When I become a criminal justice professional it is important I understand that stress is a real part of the job. I need to formulate a plan for handling stress before hand so it does not take hold of my life. First, I want to make sure I am doing a job I enjoy and believe in doing. Knowing I am doing something I want to do will make the job better, stress and all. I will make sure when I go home I do my best to leave work at work. I will find hobbies such as scrap-booking, sewing, swimming, and photography. I will make sure I am exercising regularly, because this is a wonderful way to escape and forget about everything for a while. I will also be sure to take a vacation at least once a year. It is always good to escape from everything every once in a while to maintain your sanity.
