DEFINE ROCK

A COMBINATION OF ONE OR MORE MINERALS OR ORGANIC MATTER.

How Are Rocks Classified?
-The minerals and organic matter a rock contains determines composition.
-The size, shape and position of the grains that make up a rock determine a rocks texture.

How do Igneous rocks from?
IGNEUS ROCK FROMS WHEN HOT, LIQUID MAGMA COOLS INTO SOLID ROCK

HOW DO INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCKS FORM?

  • When magma doesn't reach the earths surface it cools in large chambers or layers surrounding rock. Magma pushes it down and the rock cools on the Earths surface.
  • Ex. Granite, or diorite.

HOW DO EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS ROCKS FORM?

  • Igneous rocks that form when lava erupts or extrudes onto Earths surface.
  • Ex. Obsidian

HOW DO SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FROM?

  • They can form from weathering, erosion, deposition, burial, and cementation

THE THREE TYOES OF SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

CLASTIC,CHEMICAL,ORGANIC.

HOW DO CLASTIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FROM?

  • Sediments are buried compacted, and cemented together by calcite and quartz
  • Ex. Sandstone

HOW DO CHEMICAL SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FORM?

  • Form when water, usually seawater evaporates
  • Ex. Halite.

HOW DO ORGANIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FORM?

  • Organic sedimentary rocks form from the remains of fossils of once living plants and animals.
  • Ex. Coal, Coquina

HOW DO METAMORPHIC ROCKS FORM?

A ROCK IS EXPOSED TO HIGH TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE.

HOW DO FOLIATED METAMORPHIC ROCKS FORM?

  • The metamorphic process in which mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands.
  • Ex. Schist, gneiss.

HOW DO NON-FOLIATED ROCKS FORM?

  • They are commonly made of one or few minerals. During metamorphic mineral grains or crystals may change shape or size, some may change into another mineral
  • Ex. Quartzite and Marble
