PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Main Characters.
Jake is a rebellious kid who wants to leave New York in search of his father in Kenya after his mother dies. He feels like he belongs in Africa during his searches for his father in Africa. Jake is a 14 year Italian Hopi indian.
Supeet is a Maasai that Jake met during his travels to find his father in Kenya. He is very wise and knows a lot about how to go unseen. Supeet becomes a laibon when he goes to visit Sitonik in search of the cave where he can do the rain ceremony to finally stop the drought that has hurt Kenya's economy.
Dr. Robert Lansa
Is Jake's father who is out in the bush searching for elephants to try to learn more about them. He is a field researcher who wants to try to help the elephants out so they don't become extinct.
Donovan
Is a poacher who kills elephants for their ivory tusks. Donovan captures Jake when Jake is running from the other poachers working for Donovan. Donovan is a really mean guy he only wants to sell the tusks so he can sell them for large amounts of money.
Taw
Is Jakes grandfather who is a Hopi Indian. Taw is in his older years and is starting to lose some of his knowledge he envisions Jake walking in an open area with someone else. Taw paints a zebra pattern on Jake's bike because he is going to Africa in search of his father.
Setting
The setting takes place in New York City where Jake lives and has a happy life. This is where the story starts. Kenya is another place where the story takes place. Jake goes to Kenya to find his father.

Book Summary
Jake lived in New York with his mom and his step dad Sam. Jake and Sam do not get along very well at all. One day while Jakes mom is running she is struck by a car and is later killed. Jake is devastated. Sam makes arrangements for Jake to go to Nebraska and live with his uncle but Jake doesn't want to go so he makes other plans to go to Kenya instead to look for his father. Jake tells Sam that he is going to see his grandfather Taw for the weekend.
Book Summary
Instead of staying with Taw for the weekend he leaves for Kenya. Before Jake goes to Kenya Taw gives Jake a Kachina doll to take with him to Kenya. When Jake gets to Kenya he meet a a Maasai by the name of Supeet. Supeet is going on a journey to find Sitonik a Maasai Laibon to get the okay to do the rain ceremony to end the drought hurting Kenya's economy.
Book Summary
Jake realizes that he is in Kenya for more than his reason to find his dad. Supeet teaches Jake how to sneak up on animals without being seen. Jake doesn't even care about how long it will take to find his father. All Jake and Supeet are worried about is stopping the drought. When Supeet and Jake finally find Sitonik he teaches Supeet the drum beat for the rain ceremony and Sitonik will have to throw the bones to see into the future to know if the rain ceremony will be successful.
Book Summary
Before Jake and Supeet leave Sitonik's Kraal Sitonik makes Supeet a new Laibon. When Supeet and Jake leave Sitonik's kraal they run Ito some poachers chasing elephants and Jake feels that he needs to stop them but Supeet tries to stop him then Jake scares the poachers away but he ends up getting captured. The poachers tie Jake up but at night Supeet uses his technique to go unseen to free Jake.
Book Summary
Jake and Supeet find a place to hide until the poachers pass. When They get up there Supeet decides to take a nap, but as he is going to lay down he freezes halfway down because he sees a cobra that spits venom into his eyes making him blind then goes to sleep until Jake sees the poachers go back to their camp. Then they head off to the cave to preform the rain ceremony.
Book Summary
Outside if the cave is the first ever Maasai Laibon Lumeya's grave and everyone who has passed his grave they have to put a rock on his grave in honor of him. When Jake and Supeet get into the cave Jake sees a painting of the amulet that he has around his neck and also he sees the tunnel with light coming from it where the rain ceremony will be held.

One day Jake goes out of the cave to get goods for him and Supeet when he sees vultures flying in the air by a big baobab tree. So then Jake went to investigate when he saw a zebra caught in a trap set by poachers. Shortly after that he sees Moja the guy he had escaped from before in a car driving so Jake decides to start running and as he is running he hears an airplane and then it lands right in front of Jake.

When Jake gets into the airplane the man driving the plane is Donovan. Jake tells Donny that his fathers camp is near by because the cave was in the same area that Dr. Lansa's camp was in. Donovan flies over Dr. Lansa's camp and radios him in and says that he will work out negotiations to give him his son back. It turns out that Donovan was head of the poachers.
Book Summary
When Jake gets there Donovan try's to treat him fairly but Jake refuses so they tie him up. In the morning Dr. Lansa arrives to negotiate to get his son back. So Dr. Lansa says that instead of killing the elephants they will knock them unconscious and then cut the tusks off for Donovan. When Donovan, Jake, and the rest of the people start to head out to a place close to the cave Dr. Lansa is still waiting for parts to arrive.
Book Summary
Jake has managed to sneak away to the cave to to see if Supeet is alright as he gets in the cave he notices that the poachers have followed him so he screams to make the elephants in the cave run them over , however they ran over one.When the supplies come Jake helps
his dad hook up the tranquilizer gun Dr. Lansa shoots one of the poachers and then he gets shot in the leg. So then Jake has to go get the tusks from the elephants by using Supeet's technique. Donovan was afraid that is was going to rain and it did exactly that so they had only gotten one elephant.
Book Summary
Donovan escaped with the tusks and then Jake and Dr. Lanza radioed in someone to fly over and look for Donovan's plane. Jake and the man got into the plane and found Donovan's base and then flew over to the African army and finally put Donovan in prison.
