Lightning forms by ice crystals in the clouds colliding and cause a buildup of electrical charge that once big enough creates a lightning spark

To be classified as a severe thunderstorm, there could be flash flooding, fires, hail, and high wind speeds

Lightning can damage objects by hitting them and starting a fire

Lightning can hurt a person by causing internal burns, organ damage, a damaged nervous system along with some other injuries

FACTS ABOUT THUNDERSTORMS

• Lightning is 6 times hotter than the surface of the sun
• There are about 1,800 thunderstorms everyday
• There are 16 million thunderstorms a day
• The worst thunderstorm area in the world is Kampala, Uganda

If you are caught outside in a thunderstorm you should avoid trees and power lines and try to take shelter near or under a stony area

If you were caught in a thunderstorm when you were inside, stay away from windows and don't touch anything electronic or metal
