MARSHALL'S FAMILY

  • Thurgood Marshall was the son of William Marshall, and Norma Marshall
  • Marshall was born on July 2nd 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland
  • His father worked as a steward of an exclusive club
  • Mother was a kindergarden teacher
  • William Marshall loved to listen in on court cases

MARSHALL'S EARLY LIFE

  • Strong family discusions , said sometimes they got so into the discussions if someone hear they would have called the authorities
  • Said his love for court came from his family discussions
  • Atttended all colored schools throughout life all the way through College
  • Turned down by Maryland law university because of race even though he was over qualified
  • Marshall attended Howard University

FIRST COURT CASE MURRAY VS PEARSON

  • Thurgood Marshall's first court case was somewhat personal
  • In Murray vs Pearson Thurgood Marshall was defending another undergradute like himself denied Maryland law school due to race
  • Thurgood Marshall won the case in January of 1936
  • This was the first of many cases won by Thurgood Marshall

MOSES

  • Moses asked his brother to free the Hebrews from Jerusalem in order to avoid the consequences from God
  • These consequences would be the plagues.
  • These ten plagues, which were sent by God to show the Pharoah his strength and to harden the Pharoah's heart, can be found in the book of Exodus.
  • The ten plagues all started when Moses and Aaron approached the Pharoah, and Aaron threw down his staff and turned it into a snake.
  • Even though Thurgood Marshall didn't create plagues, he convinced people with other techniques through his education and well written speeches.

BROWN VS BOARD OF EDUCATION

  • Thurgood Marshall's greatest achievement, and most well known case which he won
  • Brown vs the Board of Education was a class action law suit
  • Black parents in Topeka Kansas who were not pleased by the fact that their children were forced to attend an all black segregated school.
  • Marshall went head on with the legal segregation set up by Plessy vs. Ferguson in 1896.
  • On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court established that the separate educational facilities were unequal and that this would violate the 14th amendment.

MARSHALLS LEGACY

  • Thurgood Marshall was appointed to be a supreme court justice.
  • Marshall's legacy may have been overshadowed and not as well known as Martin Luther King Jr or Malcolm X, but that does not mean that his legacy was not as important.
  • Thurgood Marshall died at the age of 84 on January 24, 1993.
  • Showed what it meant to not only triumph over all, but what it means to be a prophet
  • His legacy will be passed on from generation to generation.
