Beginning of career

• In 1933 he receives law degree from Howard University  
• He begins private practice in Baltimore, Maryland
• In 1934 he became the Chief Counsel for the NAACP

• From 1935-1955 he worked on court cases and had many victories
• 1956 helped end segreation on buses 
• He also helped end the montgomery bus boycott

Brown vs. board of education

• The first step in integration
• Thurgood Marshall was an NAACP lawyer 
• In 1954, He won the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

• Marshall was still working for NAACP 
• He was a lawyer during integration
• This event took place in 1957

• he took court cases allowing the students to enter
• He and the other lawyers won a federal district court injunction

• This was so he could do more court cases

• Marshall was appointed to the Second Circuit of Court Appeals

• Was sworn into the supreme court in 1967
• Marshall was first African American Justice

• Marshall countined his fight for human rights
• He retired June 27, 1991
• Marshall served on the Supreme Court for 24 years
