THYROXINE & TRIIODOTHYRINE

PRODUCTION

  • 20% is produced by the thyroid gland
  • The other 80% is produced and converted by the kidneys and liver.
  • The kidneys and liver activate the hormone

SECRETION

  • controlled by a negative feedback system.
  • Lack of thyroid hormones result in higher levels of TSH
  • TSH(thyroid-stimulating hormone)
  • Excess of thyroid hormones result in lower levels of TSH

FUNCTIONS

  • As a thyroid hormone it helps control many things
  • Metabolism (weight gain & weight loss)
  • Heartrate
  • Digestive functions
  • Body temperature and muscle control.

GRAVE'S DISEASE

  • Caused by hyperthyroidism.
  • Symptoms include
  • Heat intolerance, weight loss, irregular heartbeat
  • tiredness, tremor, hair loss
  • And retraction of the eyelids to create a staring appearance.
