PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Tidal Power

An renewable resource *ding!*

Tidal Powers Beginning

  • First used around the 20th century
  • Was a waterwheel
  • Waterwheel was used for a long time
  • Energy from flowing water powered other wheels
  • These other wheels ground grain and cut wood

How Tides Are Made

  • Tides are created the sun and moon's pull
  • These tides happen twice each day around every 12 hours
  • These tides from the sea happen at a certain place
  • These certain places are due to where the sun and moon is

Tidal Power Plants

  • One of the first tidal power plants is in Rance,France
  • It still works to this day
  • One of the largest tidal power plants is Shiwa Lake in South Korea
  • Canada,France,China,England, and Russia all have potential for using tidal

Ways to get Tidal Energy

  • Three ways to get tidal energy
  • Tidal steams
  • Dams
  • Tidal lagoons

Tidal Streams

  • Most generators are placed in tidal streams
  • Tidal streams are fast flowing bodies of water that are made by tides
  • Water turbines often are put in shallow waters
  • This help make more energy
  • The turbine blades turn slowly so wildlife won't get caught in the blades

Dams

  • Dams are also a source of getting energy
  • When the tide rises the gates are open
  • When it is high tide the gates close creating a pool
  • When the water is released is spins the turbines

Tidal lagoons

  • Tidal lagoons is a body of water almost completely surrounded by a barrier
  • Can be man made or naturally made
  • Tidal lagoons are pretty environmentally friendly

Which is better?

  • Dams cause great deals of damage to wildlife
  • Easier way to make tidal energy is by using tidal streams
  • Tidal streams are easier to put in and cost less
  • Not much energy can be made from tidal lagoons
  • Tidal streams and lagoons don't damage the wildlife as much as dams

Opinions

  • I personally think tidal power is easier to use than wind power
  • U.S might not have any good places to use this but other nations should
  • Dams are destructive and hurt wildlife and should not be used
  • Tidal streams are cheaper and environmentally friendly

Ways to Improve

  • Engineers are trying to improve technology of tidal power plant generators
  • There trying to do this so they can increase the amount of energy
  • Also trying to improve their impact on the environment
