TIDAL VOLUME

  • Is the amount of air inspired or
  • Expired in a single breath.
  • During regular breathing
  • Usually 500 mL

Tidal volume
A portion of each tidal volume occupies the conducting airways, which do not participate in gas exchange. Since the volume occupying the airways is rebreathed or wasted it's called dead space.

TIDAL VOLUME

  • Tidal volume is basically normal respiratory rate
  • 12-16 for adults at rest.
  • Infants are 30-60
  • Childres ages 6-12 are 18-30

TIDAL VOLUME

  • You can increase tidal volume if
  • You breath deeply
  • Breathing deeply is called
  • Inpiratory reserve volume
