1488 BARTOLOMEU DIAS ROUNDS SOUTHERN TIP OF AFRICA

  • He was the first European mariner to round the southern tip of Africa.
  • Dias' breakthrough increased trade with India and Asia

1492 CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS REACHES THE CARIBBEAN

  • Christopher Columbus landed on a small island he called San Salvador.
  • Columbus believed he had reached the Indies.

1494 SPAIN AND PORTUGAL SIGN THE TREATY OF TORDESILLAS

  • It moved the line 270 leagues west, to 370 leagues west of Cape Verde.
  • Portugal and Spain kept to their sides of the line quite well.

1498 VASCO DA GAMA REACHES THE PORT OF CALICUT ON THE INDIAN OCEAN

  • Da Gama sailed from Portugal rounded the Cape of Good Hope and anchored on the east coast of Africa.

  • Their initial goal was to develop trade links
