EISENHOWER ANNOUNCES DOMINO THEORY

• 1954
• The president that proposed the Domino theory was Dwight Eisenhower. The theory stated if a particular country within a specific region became communist, the rest of the countries surrounding it would also adopt communism due to influences from the prior country. The process would continually go on causing a 'domino effect.

VIETCONG FORMED

• 1960 1964
• Established at the end of 1960, the VC was created by the North Vietnamese communists to escalate the armed struggle in South Vietnam. In the early 60's they grew rapidly and by 1964, totaled over 30,000 soldiers.

GULF OF TONKIA RESOLUTION

• 1964
• Congressional resolution passed in 1964 that authorized military action in Southeast Asia. On Aug. 4, 1964, North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin were alleged to have attacked without provocation U.S. destroyers that were reporting intelligence information to South Vietnam. OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER

IA DRANG VALLY(BATTLE)

• 1965
• The first major battle that involved US ground forces, Ia Drang saw them suffer 96 killed and 121 wounded at X-Ray and 155 killed and 124 wounded at Albany. Estimates for North Vietnamese losses are around 800 killed at X-Ray and minimum of 403 killed at Albany.
