TIMELINE OF WORLD WAR I

ASSASSINATION OF FRANZ FERNIDAND

  • Along side with his wife by Serbian nationalists in Sarajevo, Bosnia,
  • The assassination of Franz set off a chain of events, many countries blamed the Serbian government for the attack

CHAIN OF EVENTS

  • Because of the chain of events that happened.
  • Countries backed up other countries
  • Within a week, Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia had lined up against Austria-Hungary and Germany

Wilson wins 1916 presidential election November 1916

  • As Wilson went on with his campaign he pled to keep America
  • out of War

AMERICA WANTS TO STAY NEUTRAL BUT...

  • AUGUST 19 - U.S. PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON ANNOUNCES THE U.S. WILL REMAIN NEUTRAL.

ZIMMERMAN NOTE

  • January 19 - Germany sends the secret Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico in an effort to entice Mexico
  • to join the war, but Britian intercepts the message and decodes it.

AMERICA JOINS THE WAR

  • Because of the threat America declares war on Germany
  • April 6 - The United States declares war on Germany.

WOODROWS 14 POINTS

  • The Fourteen Points speech was the only explicit statement of war aims by any of the nations fighting in World War I.
  • Some belligerents gave general indications of their aims, but most kept their post-war goals private

GERMANY SURRENDERS

  • 1918 November 11 - Germany signs the armistice at Compiegne
  • France. Fighting ends on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month

WAR OFFICIALLY ENDS

  • 1919 June 28 - The Treaty of Versailles officially ends World War 1.
