EARLY HISTORY

  • The hospitality industry probably began with the Sumerians.
  • In 4000 B.C the sumerians lived in a region near the Persian Gulf that
  • Was then called Mesopotamia.
  • Early traders traveled from region to region to trade their spices,
  • gold, & other exotic goods.

INNS FOR STAGECOACH TRAVELERS

  • In the 1600s stagecoach routes were established in the United Sates.
  • Good service was very important at this inns.
  • Inns and taverns were popular gathering places.
  • The first building designed specifically as a hotel was probably New York City's city Hotel.

GRAND HOTELS FOR RAILROAD TRAVELERS

  • During the 1800s railroad travel developed and spread.
  • Inns, saloons, and restaurants were built close to the railway stations .
  • The Tremont Hotel, one of the first grand hotels, was built in Boston in 1828.
  • Hotels were often the first places where new technology was used.
  • Hotels were among the first places to have elevators amd electric lights.

MOTELS FOR AUTOMOBILE TRAVELERS

  • Wilson's first Holiday Inn was in Memphis, Tenesse. It was built in 1952.
  • Hotels offered coin-operated radios and television sets during this period.
  • Motels provided free televisions.
  • Motels were usually built at the edge of towns.

AIRPORT HOSPITALITY FOR AIR TRAVELERS

  • Hospitality choices grew again when comercial jets began operating in 1958.
  • Hotels, motels, foodservices, and restaurants were designed to meet the needs of air travelers.
  • Airport shuttle services were developed to transport guests from hotels to nearby airports.

POLITICAL CONDITIONS

  • The unprecedented terrorist attack on New York City &
  • Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001 had a devastating effect
  • On the U.S hospitality industry & the hospitality industry worldwide
  • Many hospitality businesses in New York City, including the world famous windows
  • On the restaurant, were destroyed.

ECONOMIC CONDITIONS

  • During the 1900's, the U.S experienced the longest economic
  • Expansion in it's history.
  • During this period, hospitality businesses did ectremely well.

  • Globalization is having a major impact the
  • Hospitality industry.
  • An economicproblem in one country can affect the economies of countries
  • Around the world.
  • An example if the effect of globalization occurred in the 1900's

  • It's economy.
