PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Northwest Ordinance of 1787
The ordinance guaranteed basic rights for settlers and banned slavery there. The ordinance set a three step system for admitting new states. It created tension because the North and the South had different views on slavery.
Missouri Compromise 1820
The Missouri compromise was when they drew a line dividing the North and the South, and all the states North of the line were free states and all the states south of the line were slave states. This separated the states even more because they did not agree on slavery.
Texas Annexation February 1845
In 1845 congress voted for admitting Texas as a state three days before Tyler left office. Texan delegates held a convention and voted for annexation. This increased tensions because they where given more land for Texas than they should have.
Mexican American War May 1845
Polk sent General Zachary Taylor south to dispute land hoping that the Mexicans would attack the U.S. Troops. Mexicans saw this as war and fought back, Polk soon asked congress to declare war. This lead to tensions because the North thought that Polk provoked war, and they opposed the war.
Wilmot Proviso August 1846
In the Missouri Compromise the territory gained from the Mexican American war was not included. The North feared that the south would gain to much power if the territory allowed slavery. So David Wilmot proposed that congress ban slavery in all territory that was gained from the Mexican American war. This created tension because the south thought that it was an attack on slavery by the North.
Free Soil Party Summer of 1848
Antislavery Whigs and Democrats joined to create the Free Soil Party. The party wanted the territory won in the Mexican American war to be banned of slavery, "free soil." This created tension because the South wanted slavery and they thought it gave the north more power.
Compromise of 1850 (September)
The compromise was a series of laws made to please the North and the South. This created tensions because what was given to please the North the South opposed, and what was given to the South the North opposed.
Fugitive Slave Law September 1850
The Fugitive Slave Law allowed slave owners to find and capture their old slaves who escaped from freedom. This increased tensions because the law reminded the North of how much they opposed slavery and the ways of the South.
Republican Party 1854
The Republican Party was a political group of Northerners and Whigs who opposed slavery. The main goal of the party was to stop slavery from spreading west. This increased tension because it gave the North more power in politics.
Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854
The Kansas-Nebraska Act made it so that the people would decide wether the territories would allow slavery or not. This created tensions because it went against the Missouri Compromise and the South supported the act.
Bleeding Kansas 1855
After the Kansas-Nebraska Act went in place and people began to settle in Kansas, violence broke out and the time was called Bleeding Kansas. This created tensions because proslavery and antislavery people were fighting.
Dred Scott Decision 1857
Roger B. Taney decided that Scott was not a free man because he had no right to sue in federal court, and just because he lived in a free state didn't mean he was free. Taney said that the congress did not have the power to ban slavery in states, ruling the Missouri Compromise as unconstitutional. This caused tensions because it gave the South more power for slavery and the Missouri Compromise no longer mattered.
Election of 1860 (November)
Abraham Lincoln won in every free state and received 40% of the popular votes and own President. This caused tensions because Lincoln opposed slavery.
South Carolina Secedes from the Union
December 20, 1860
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. December 20 a convention was held and passed a declaration that "the union now subsisting between South Carolina and the other states, under the name of the 'United States of America' is hereby dissolved." This created tensions because it split America and the Southern states were furious.
