BIOGRAPHY

  • Junípero Serra was born in Petra, Majorca, Spain in 1730.
  • He was born under the name Miquel Josep Serra I Ferrer.
  • He took the name Junípero when he joined the Franciscan order after St. Jupiter.
  • At the age of 27 he left for the Americas and taught Philosophy at the Convento de San Francisco

BIOGRAPHY

  • In 1749 Junípero Serra gave up his carrier as a priest and as professor at a university to become an apostolic missionary and convert Native Americans to catholisism.
  • At the age of 56 Junípero Serra help an important role in the settlement and colanization of California.

  • Junípero Serra founded a mission in Baja California and the first nine of the 21Spanish missions in California.
  • He founded missions from San Diego (mission San Diego de Alcalá)all the way up to San Francisco (misión San Francisco de Asís)
  • The missions goals were to convert Native American to christianity in California.
  • Junípero Serra's headquarters during his founding of the Californian missions was mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo near Monterey, California.

  • On August 28, 1784, at the age of 70, Junípero Serra died at Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo.
  • He is buried there under the sanctuary floor.

  • Junípero Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988,
  • He will be canonized on September 23, 2015 in Washington D.C. by Pope Francis.
