BIOGRAPHY

Biography of Carson McCullers: Mrs. McCullers was born on Feb.19,1917 and passed on Sept.29,1967 at the age of 50 in New York. Carson McCullers is an american author; writing style: southern goth. She’s known for writing books that portray the lives of the alone.

-At the age of 17 she attended New York and Colombia university.
-Married Reeves McCullers in 1937 got divorced in 1940, and got remarried in 1945.

McCullers had a life full of tragedy, pain and a lot of illnesses. I have a right to believe that Carson wrote the way she did due to the trials and tribulations throughout her life.

Later in life Carson McCullers suffered constantly from strokes which later on paralyzed her and spent the rest of her years in a wheelchair.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Achievements:
- Carson’s career was successfully launched due to her 1st novel “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter”, in 1940 which was later on made into a film in 1968.

- McCullers novel “The Member of the Wedding”, was later made into a play and was known as “a new form of American theatre”. Ran on Broadway for over a year.

- In 1940 McCullers crossed paths with American playwright Tennessee Williams. If it wast for him her novel probably wouldn’t have made its broadway debut.

Carson McCullers once said…

“How can the dead be truly dead when they still live in the souls of those who are left behind?” (McCullers 333)

This excerpt or quote is from her famous novel “ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”.

Carson McCullers brought a form of significance to writing because just like Nathaniel Hawthorne tend to focus on portraying the protagonists as eccentric to other characters in the story and focus on more on gloom setting and the melancholy lives of people(characters ) in this case.
Having writers like Nathaniel Hawthorne and Carson McCullers allows readers to become more open minded to aware of what darkness can be and how its portrayed in many different ways.

REFLECTION

Since my presentation is coming to an end I would to say that it was very interesting to dive in to the life of Lula Carson McCullers. If you are a reader that leans towards reading more gloom and goth novels, Carson McCullers might be a perfect fit for you.

Unfortunately due to her passing away there are doors full or questions and curiosity just waited to be opened and answered. I am definitely gonna have to read one of books sometime.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

EQ: To what extent is the Southern gothic genre eccentric?
Eccentric: unconventional; strange.
Any sort of gothic writing can be considered eccentric to others, but what is really?

Based of of research southern goth writing style doesn’t focus on gore or suspense. Instead the Southern Gothic writing style focuses more isolation, racism and suffering. These topics are less eccentric and more full of realism.
