Additional Provisions

  • Discrimination protection based on pregnancy.
  • Scholarship Opportunities.

Why was it necessary?

  • In 1972 only 30,000 Women were participating in sports as compared to 130,000 men.

Myths Surrounding Title IX

  • Title IX does not require equal funding to female athletics, just equal representation.
  • Women's athletic programs don't lower the cost for non revenue men's athletics. Division I Football and Basketball is the main reason cuts are made to other sports.
  • Women's athletic programs turn a profit.

Schools who do not comply with the law face sanctions and the loss of their federal funding. In a recent case a College was investigated after not properly reporting sexual harassment reports.
