Sporophyte

• spore producing plants; the multicellular diploid phase of a plant life cycles

Gametophyte

• gamete producing plants; multicellular haploid phase of a plant life cycle

Vascular tissue

• specialized tissue implants that carries water and nutrients

Tracheid

• hollow plant call in xylem with thick cell walls strengthened by lignin

Xylem

• vascular tissue that carries water upward from the roots to every part of a plant

Phloem

• tissue that transports solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis through the plant

Seed

• plant embryo and a food supply encased in a protecting covering

Gymnosperm

• Group of seed plants that bear their seeds directly on the scales of cones.

Angiosperm

• group of seed plants that bear their seeds within a layer of tissue that protects the seed, also called flowering plant

Pollination

• transfer of pollen from the male reproductive structure to the female reproductive structure

Ovule

• structure in the seed comes in which the female gametophytes develop

Flagellum

• structure used by protists for movement; produces movement in the wave-like motion

Monocot

• angiosperm with one seed leaf in its ovary

Dicot

• angiosperm with two seed leaves in its ovary

• resumption of growth of the plant embryo following dormancy

Tap root

• The primary roots found in some plants that grows longer and thicker than the other roots

Fibrous root

• part of a root system in which roots branch to such an extent that no single route grows larger than the rest

• Specialized cell in the epidermis of plants that control the opening and closing of stomata

Tropism

• movement of a plant toward or away from stimuli
