THE CREATION OF BASKETBALL

How was Basketball first Invented?
Basketball was invented on 1891 by James A. Naismith . He got the idea by another game he saw children playing. The original game had 13 different rules. I you played basketball in the 1890's you would use a peach basket and a soccer ball for the basket and the ball. Iron hoops with open ended nets did not come until 1913.

• He wanted the sport to be a mix of football, soccer, and hockey for the winter.
• The original sport had 2 teams of 9 players.
• They used two peach baskets and a soccer ball for a hoop and a basketball
• You can only pass and shoot, no dribbling

• 1891: the creation of basketball
• 1892: dribbling was added
• 1892 also: 9 players is now only 5
• 1906: they used iron hoops and a pole instead of peach baskets
• 1932: uniforms are added to the game

• 1933: the 3 point line was made
• 1937: NBL (National Basketball League)
• 1946: change of title BAA (Basketball Association of America)
• 1949: another change to NBA (National Basketball Association)
• 1978: 8 inch basketball shorts.

• 1984:12 inch instead of 8 inch shorts.
• Current length is 18 inches
