Proverbs 16New Living Translation (NLT)

16 We can make our own plans,
but the Lord gives the right answer.
2 People may be pure in their own eyes,
but the Lord examines their motives.
3 Commit your actions to the Lord,
and your plans will succeed.
4 The Lord has made everything for his own purposes,
even the wicked for a day of disaster.
5 The Lord detests the proud;
they will surely be punished.
6 Unfailing love and faithfulness make atonement for sin.
By fearing the Lord, people avoid evil.
7 When people’s lives please the Lord,
even their enemies are at peace with them.
8 Better to have little, with godliness,
than to be rich and dishonest.
9 We can make our plans,
but the Lord determines our steps.
10 The king speaks with divine wisdom;
he must never judge unfairly.
11 The Lord demands accurate scales and balances;
he sets the standards for fairness.
12 A king detests wrongdoing,
for his rule is built on justice.
13 The king is pleased with words from righteous lips;
he loves those who speak honestly.
14 The anger of the king is a deadly threat;
the wise will try to appease it.
15 When the king smiles, there is life;
his favor refreshes like a spring rain.
16 How much better to get wisdom than gold,
and good judgment than silver!
17 The path of the virtuous leads away from evil;
whoever follows that path is safe.
18 Pride goes before destruction,
and haughtiness before a fall.
19 Better to live humbly with the poor
than to share plunder with the proud.
20 Those who listen to instruction will prosper;
those who trust the Lord will be joyful.
21 The wise are known for their understanding,
and pleasant words are persuasive.
22 Discretion is a life-giving fountain to those who possess it,
but discipline is wasted on fools.
23 From a wise mind comes wise speech;
the words of the wise are persuasive.
24 Kind words are like honey—
sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
25 There is a path before each person that seems right,
but it ends in death.
26 It is good for workers to have an appetite;
an empty stomach drives them on.
27 Scoundrels create trouble;
their words are a destructive blaze.
28 A troublemaker plants seeds of strife;
gossip separates the best of friends.
29 Violent people mislead their companions,
leading them down a harmful path.
30 With narrowed eyes, people plot evil;
with a smirk, they plan their mischief.
31 Gray hair is a crown of glory;
it is gained by living a godly life.
32 Better to be patient than powerful;
better to have self-control than to conquer a city.
33 We may throw the dice,[a]
but the Lord determines how they fall.

Seek the Lord

For the right answers
vs 1

1. We are to make preparations for the future

Looking at trends.

Giving decreasing for the last three years

Attendance has bee at 100 for the last 10 years......

The largest expenditure is the food distribution

2. NLT. Says the right answers are provided by the Lord....literally from the tongue of the Lord

God's Word

Leading of God's Spirit

We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer.

Commit

Your Way to the Lord
vs. 3
Photo by mnapoleon

Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed

To commit. - to roll in, dive in, to be all in .....

Our efforts....what we do, our labours, the things we expend energy doing

To Jahweh - to the Lord

Who calls us personally

Who commissions us personally

Gifts

Field of ministry

Our plans. -

what we think or envision

The picture we have in our minds

Different word than in verse 1

To be set, established, fixed....

The Next Step

Identify
vs 9

We can make our plans,
but the Lord determines our steps.

Vs. 9

To make a plan....

To create a strategy

Devise a series of action steps

Current Reality Intended Future

LORD. Jahweh again

Has a process laid out for us......

We have but to follow it......

A way......

A road......

1 Cor 10:13. Make a way out

Exodus... the way out

(Word study on way or road)

To follow - put your feet in the footsteps of the person in front of you

Turn Away from Evil

vs. 17
Photo by The Tire Zoo

The path of the virtuous leads away from evil;
whoever follows that path is safe.

vs. 17

The way of the righteous those who follow the Lord's plan for life.....

Path automatically takes us around evil

Evil is that which is morally objectionable behavior......

Actions that hurt others

Actions that harm others

Actions that oppress others

Actions that create misery in others

If we follow that path

We are protected , set a guard over, a watchman over our hearts......

Deeply seated protection......emotional wounds.....

Danger

"Avoid What Seems Right"
vs. 25
Photo by Olivier Hill

There is a path before each person that seems right,
but it ends in death.

vs. 25

Path - emphasis on the journey not just individual footsteps

And the direction that journey is taking you

Seems morally correct but is not

(Illus. Recent video of people on the streets seeing a video on abortion. Lifeactionnews.org

Leads to death, lifelessness

A lifeless church......

Adjust as we Go

vs. 33
Photo by lungstruck

We may throw the dice,but the Lord determines how they fall.

vs. 33

We do our part and make decisions

Cast lots, throw dice........etc

But the LORD

Leads, like a ruling government would lead, establish policy, make laws etc

The personal God Jehovah determines how things fall....

The policies, guidelines commandments that shape the environment in which decisions are made, thus influencing how they are implemented

Especially moral decisions.....

So we make adjustments as we move along and as we learn more

Footsteps of Faith

  • Seek for right answers
  • Commit plan to the LORD
  • Identify next steps
  • Turn away from evil
  • Avoid what "seems right"
  • Adjust as we go

Dear Lord, I thank you for being a God who has a personal interest in the direction of our journey as a church. We ask you for a sensitivity to your voice as we navigate the uncertain nature of our transition time.

Dear Lord, I thank you for being a God who has a personal interest in the direction of our journey as a church. We ask you for a sensitivity to your voice as we navigate the uncertain nature of our transition time. We ask for the grace and strength to go all in once the clarity we seek is reached, especially as it relates to what you want us to do each step of the way. In the process help us to steer clear of the temptation to say and do things that will only make the uncertainty worse and lead to unnecessary harm to our church and the effectiveness of our ministries. . Protect us from the negative influence of our culture that would lead us to lifeless decision making and give us the insight we need to adjust our action steps in the coming days ahead.

We look to you LORD…..in the name of Jesus……amen.
