How + When to use Ser and Estar

In English we simply use is, am, & are.

I AM a student, he IS hungry, we ARE family, etc.

But in Spanish, we can't just say Yo Soy for everything ...

To talk about
a) where something is currently located
OR
b) How someone is currently feeling,
use:
estoy estamos
estás estáis
está están

If I am tired...

Yo ESTOY cansado.

If my brother is in his room,

Mi hermano está en su dormitorio.

If you are sick...

Tú estás enfermo :-/

If I want to know how you're doing...

¿Cómo estás?

Use a conjugated form of ESTAR

to discuss anything that is currently true.

That even includes actions...

Yo estoy corriendo = I'm (currently) running

Some ESTAR examples

  • Yo estoy en la sala. (I'm in the living room)
  • Tú estás hablando mucho. (you're talking a lot).
  • Ud. está feliz, no? (You are happy, right?)
  • Los libros están en mi mochila. (the books are in my backpack).
  • Yo estoy muy bien, gracias. (i'm doing well, thanks.)

If you need to say Is, Am, or Are

to describe anything else...

soy somos
eres sois

He is my father.

Él es mi padre.

It is four o'clock.

Son las cuatro.

So, when discussing current location, current feelings, or current action,

Use Estar.

Otherwise,

use
Ser
