ATTICUS FINCH

FACTS

  • Neither of the Finch kids call Atticus their Dad.
  • He is a lawyer in Maycomb.
  • He agrees to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman.
  • This exposes himself and his family to the anger of Maycomb.
  • Atticus was 15 years older than his wife.

Atticus is a father of two.

SCOUT AND JEM

ARE HIS AND HIS LATE WIFE'S CHILDREN

Atticus hired a black woman to help out around the house and mind the children name Calpurnia.

ATTICUS' BACKGROUND

  • He grew up on Finch's land
  • He was taught at home by his father
  • He attended law school
  • Atticus represented his County in state Legislature

SCOUT AND ATTICUS' RELATIONSHIP

  • They have a great relationship
  • There is a lot of trust involved
  • We see this when he tells scout not to get involved in fights
  • Scout listens to her Father and does the right thing
  • This shows that she has a lot of respect for her Father

THE TRIAL

  • Judge Taylor appointed Atticus to represent Tom Robinson
  • During the trial he faces criticism, threats and hatred
  • And still he sticks by his client
  • He also knows that he is going to lose the case
  • This shows Atticus is a very respectful person to all races

TRAITS OF ATTICUS

  • He is not racist like most people at that time
  • He does not go with what everyone else thinks
  • He possesses hidden courage
  • We see this when he shoots a rabid dog
