WHAT IS TOBACCO ADDICTION?

TOBACCO ADDICTIONS IS..

  • Is a practice in which a substance, most commonly tobacco, is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled
  • Nicotine is the main chemical in tobacco it is just as addictive as heroine or cocaine.
  • Cigarettes contain over 4,000 chemicals & 2,000 poisons containing toxins found in rat poisoning, battery acid
  • Nicotine is considered addictive because it alters brain functioning; Smoking gives pleasure to the brain
  • Nicotine is a ‘reinforcing’ drug; smokers want it regardless of its damaging effects

WHAT TOBACCO DOES...

  • Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States
  • Imposing a terrible toll in health, lives and dollars on families, businesses, & governments
  • Tobacco kills more than 400,000 people annually
  • That's more than AIDS, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined.
  • Tobacco is also the leading cause of lung cancer, tobacco rots the skin, teeth, nails and slowly kills you

TOBACCO IS COSTING US

  • Tobacco costs the U.S. more than $96 billion in health care expenditures
  • $97 billion in lost productivity each year.
  • Cigarette use causes premature death.
  • On average, smokers die 14 years earlier than nonsmokers. Secondhand smokers are also at risk
  • On average, secondhand smoke causes 3,400 deaths from lung cancer; 46,000 deaths from heart diseas

DEATHS AND DISEASE IN THE U.S. FROM TOBACCO USE

  • People who die each year from their own cigarette smoking approx. 400,000
  • Kids under 18 alive today who will ultimately die from smoking 6,000,000+
  • Adult nonsmokers who die each year from exposure to secondhand smoke approx. 50,000
  • People in the USA who currently suffer from smoking-caused illness approx. 8.6 million
  • More than 3,000 kids try their first cigarette each day.

HOW TO PREVENT TOBACCO USE

  • Help Teach others what tobacco does
  • Learn about the facts so you aren't pressured into smoking
  • Help a friend who does it or you see being pressured into it
  • Tell an adult about any situation with tobacco use inside or out of school
