HOW DOES TOBACCO EFFECT YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM?

WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM

  • Tobacco contains a large amount of tar and other chemicals
  • Those chemicals make it harder for a smoker to fight off infections
  • It also makes it harder to fight off cancer

WHITE BLOOD CELLS

  • Smoking creates a high number of white blood cells
  • That is a sign that your body is under a lot of stress
  • High white blood cell count is a signal that you've been injured
  • This puts you in a higher risk of a heart attack or stroke

TAKES LONGER TO HEAL

  • Nicotine makes veins tighten
  • This makes nutrients and oxygen harder to flow through them
  • It also makes it harder for nutrients to heal wounds
  • It puts smokers at a higher risk of infection after surgery or injury
  • Painful skin ulcers can develop causing skin tissue to slowly die
