Plan for the Next 2 Hours

  • Some context (10min)
  • "People cannot choose what they have not seen or experienced" (90 min)
  • Some 'formal' reflection and sharing (15 min)
  • Final comments and logistical things (5 min)
1. I would like to take a minute to connect what we are about to do to learning theory, the direction of our province and
the direction of the district -- just to give some rational and frame it a bit

2) This quote comes from Invent to Learn (p.187) and I firmly believe that it is true. I can talk and you can read all day long, but in order to form an opinion and make a decision about what we are talking about today, you need to experience it. That is why the bulk of the time is dedicated to working with these "thinking tools". There are tasks set out for you to try and the bulk of the time will be spent with the tasks

3) I called it 'formal' reflection and sharing because these two things will occur naturally as you explore the tools and work on the tasks, but I reserved a bit of time at the end to do a bit of that in a bit more of a formal way

4) The last part is just a bit about signing out the materials and the coaching time

Dewey
Piaget
Papert

John Dewey (1859-1952) - Focus on student centered learning, rejected the idea of highly regimented schooling

Piaget (1896-1980) - Knowledge is constructed by the learner -- This theory became known as constrcutivism

Papert (1928-2006?) - Constructionism - the idea that manipulative materials are used in the creation of knowledge and the demonstration of understanding

"Seymour Papert says that the profound ideas of John Dewey didn't fail, but were simply ahead of their time."
(Martinez Stager, 2013)

Dewy, Piaget and Papert all lead us to today where the focus of education in our province is student centered learning

Inspiring Ed.
Transform!

Inspiring Ed. document - circa. 2010 & Ministerial Order 2013... both called for a focus on the learner and building competencies

Our district embraced this with Transform! and encouraged a shift to student centered learning

Papert was right! We are now ready for Dewey's ideas almost 100 years later.

So... we need some tools to think with

....and technology allows you to make a lot more interesting things
The tools do not need to be 'technology' tools (Alan Kay says that 'Technology is anything that wasn't around when we were born')

....But there are so many things out there that now that kids can use to explore and learn and demonstrate their constructed understanding

....We bought some of that stuff for our students to explore and today we are going to explore it first so we all can build our own knowledge around coding, robotics, and 'making' in the classroom

The Plan....

  • Stations set up with task/materials
  • At each station are Papert's 8 Big Ideas and the 10 Cross Curric. Competencies
  • Work at a station that appeals in groups that work best for you
1. The tasks include materials to think with that we have purchased at the school (except little bits... But lending library)

2. Review the task, watch the videos. Papert's 8 Big Ideas are there along with the competencies so as you work, you can think, talk, reflect on how the task fits with these two documents

3. Feel free to move around and look at all the challenges, find one that appeals to you. This is your time to learn and explore. There is no wrong way to do it!!!
....but take charge of your own learning, take time, have some hard fun and fail (some of Papert's 8)

The Stations...

  • Operation Game - Makey Makey/ Scratch
  • Write a Story - Rasp. Pi / Scratch
  • Create an Animal Cam - Rasp. Pi
  • Musical Marshmallows - Makey Makey/ Scratch
  • Truck Crane - Little Bits
  • Art Bot - Dash and Dot
  • Hokey Pokey - Kibo
Take 30 seconds to show where the station is and show what the tool to think with is

'Successful learning expeditions use the curriculum as the buoy, not the boat'
(Martinez & Stager, 2013, p.58)

A closing thought

reflection

Tweets!
Compose your tweet
Refine your tweet
Share your tweet with the group

Put them up on the wall for others to see

All have a look at the tweet wall

Other thoughts or questions about the session?

some logistical things

...I will email all this
The learning curve on this is steep and it is a great way to use coaching time

Tools will be stored in the library and sign out will be the same as the iPads and Laptops
