Salicornia depressa

  • Grows independently, unlike its clumped counterpart (S. virginica)
  • Can serve as snack food
  • Generally one of the first colonizers when re-establishing or reclaiming 

Juncus gerardii

  • Usually dead by mid-season, and is black/brown
  • Very thin and lots of it!

Spartina patens

  • Shorter of the two spartinas
  • Easily confused with Distichliss spicata

Spartina alterniflora

  • Two forms, short and tall
  • Tops are sharp
  • Common in high marsh plots

Phragmites australis

  • Invasive to North America
  • First recorded in the United States in the 1600s
  • Common on the sides of highways
  • Control mechanisms are in research
