DEFINITION OF TOPIC

  • What the writing and story is about.
  • It is like the main idea.
  • It is just the facts.
  • You can not debate it.
  • It is the "what" in the story.

DEFINITION OF THEME

  • The theme is the author's point of view about a topic.
  • It's the "so what".
  • It is the lesson of the story.
  • It is the deeper or underlying meaning of a story.
  • Subjective

Topic: Four people overcame a serious problem in their life.

Theme: You can overcome everything if you try your best.

The story of Malala Yousafzai

Topic: Malala doesn't give up on trying to get equal rights.

Theme: The author's message is that don't give up on what you believe in.
