DICTIONARY DEFINITION

  • a mobile destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel shaped cloud advancing beneath a large storm system.

IN OUR OWN WORDS

  • A strong wind that circulates under a storm system at a fast speed, sometimes carrying debris with it.

HOW THEY FORM

  • Tornadoes form when warm moist air collides with cool dry air, and starts moving in a circle, the wind creates a small invisible force of wind on the ground which eventually has a cloud formed around it hence a tornado

MEASUREMENT

  • Tornadoes are measured and assessed by the amount of damage they deal to property
  • On the Fujita scale it ranges from F-0 - F-5 on the enchanted scale it ranges from EF-0 - EF5

FACTS

  • The El-Reno Oklahoma tornado in 2013 grew to 2.6 miles in width
  • Tornadoes cause an average of 70 fatalities, and 1,500 injuries a year
  • The roar of a tornado depends on what it is sucking up
  • The deadliest tornado in history was in 1989 in bangladesh India. It travelled through the Dhaka region killing more than 1,300 people
  • Tornadoes can reach speeds of up to 480 kmph

STORM SAFTEY

  • Know the signs of a tornado, rotation in cloud base, whirling dust / debris, etc...
  • Have a place where you can take shelter in your home
  • Put your head in between your legs and place your hands on the back of your head
  • If you don't have a basement go to a secure room with no windows, if you are in a apartment go to the lowest floor and hide in a room with no windows
  • Keep watching the weather service if you have a severe storm warning
