HOW A TORNADO FORMS

  • The formation of a tornado follows clear set of steps
  • First there is a change in wind direction and wind speed
  • This occurs in the sky and forms invisible horizontal spinning effect
  • In the lower atmosphere

HOW TORNADOS FORM

  • Next, rising air within the thunderstorm's up drafts
  • Tilts the rotating air from horizontal to vertical
  • Third, an area of rotation, 3-10km wide is contained
  • Within a vast majority of the storm
  • Then a lower cloud base in the center of a storm becomes a rotating wall cloud

  • Less than 5% of tornado deaths
  • Lifetime 1-10 mins
  • Winds less than 110mph

STRONG TORNADOS

  • 29% of all tornados
  • Nearly 30% of all tornado deaths
  • May last 20 mins or longer
  • Winds 110-205mph

VIOLENT

  • Only 2% of all tornados
  • 70% of all tornado deaths
  • Lifetime can exceed 1 hr

NEWCASTLE TORNADO

  • Developed in Newcastle OK
  • Moore OK got the worst of it
  • Was a EF5 tornado

DISTANCE

  • The width was 2.6mi
  • Traveled 17 miles

  • Killed 24 people
  • Injured 377 others
  • Larger weather system that produced
  • several other tornados in the previous two days
