PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TORNADOES

By Callum Hodgson

Where can you find Tornadoes

  • Tornadeos occur in many parts of the world including Africa, Australia, Europe and more. They can also be found in the Great Plains of central United States.Even New Zealand reports about 20 tornadoes each year.

How do tornadoes form?

Tornadoes form when warm, humid air collides with dry cool air.The denser cool air is pushed over the warm air, usually causing thunderstorms. The warm air rises through the cold air usually causing an updraft......When it touches the ground, it’s a tornado

WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF A TORNADO

  • At the top there is a thunderstorm cloud
  • In the middle there is a spiral updraft and a funnel cloud
  • And at the bottom there is a debris cloud

WARNING SIGNS THAT A TORNADOES MAY DEVELOP

  • A dark often greenish sky
  • Wall clouds or an approaching cloud of debris
  • Large hail often in the absence of rain
  • Before a tornado strikes the wind may die down and the air may become very still
  • A loud roar similar to a freight train may be heard
  • An approaching cloud of debris, Evan if the funnel is not visible

HOW CAN YOU SURVIVE TORNADOES

  • Go to the basement or inside a room without windows on the lowest floor (bathroom, closet, center hallway)
  • Avoid windows
  • For added protection get under something sturdy (a heavy table or work bench) cover your body with blanket, sleeping bag or mattress.
  • Do not stay in a mobile home.

WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO PREDICT TORNADOES

  • The precise tracking and prediction of tornadoes is not yet a reality. Meteorologists can identify conditions that are likely to lead to severe storms...... It is still not possible, however to detect a funnel cloud by radar and predict its path, touch down point and other important details.
